Why Good Acoustics Matter in Theatres, Teaching Spaces, Studios and Meeting Rooms

When people think about successful buildings, they often focus on architecture, technology, lighting or interior design. Yet one of the most important aspects of any space is something that is often overlooked until problems arise: acoustics.

Whether it’s a theatre where audience members struggle to understand dialogue, a classroom where students cannot clearly hear their teacher, a boardroom where hybrid meetings become frustrating, or a studio where recordings are compromised by unwanted noise, poor acoustics can have a significant impact on the way people experience a space.

The challenge is that acoustics are often invisible when done well. Users rarely notice a room with excellent acoustic performance, but they quickly notice when speech becomes difficult to understand, sound becomes distracting or technology fails to perform as expected.

This is why engaging an acoustic consultant early in a project can be one of the most important decisions a client makes. Good acoustics are essential for communication, learning and performance. By engaging an acoustic consultant during the early design stages of a project, organisations can create spaces that sound better, support users more effectively and improve the performance of AV systems.

Why Acoustics Should Be Considered from the Start

One of the most common misconceptions is that acoustic issues can be resolved towards the end of a project.

In reality, many of the factors that influence acoustic performance are determined during the earliest stages of design.

Room dimensions, ceiling heights, building materials, glazing, structural design, mechanical services and spatial layouts all influence how sound behaves within a space. Once these decisions have been made, it can be difficult and expensive to address acoustic shortcomings.

By engaging an acoustic consultant during feasibility studies, briefing and concept design stages, clients can ensure that acoustic performance is considered alongside architecture, functionality and aesthetics from the outset.

This allows acoustic requirements to become part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Working Alongside Architects and Design Teams

The most successful projects are those where acoustic consultants work closely with architects from the earliest stages.

Architects create spaces that are visually inspiring, functional and responsive to the needs of users. Acoustic consultants help ensure those spaces also sound as good as they look.

This collaboration can influence many aspects of a project, including:

Room proportions and volume

Surface finishes and materials

Building envelope design

Internal layouts

Noise control strategies

Mechanical and electrical services coordination

Sound insulation between spaces

Speech intelligibility and user experience

When architects and acoustic consultants work together early in the design process, .often alongside a venue design consultant, it is often possible to achieve better outcomes while avoiding costly remedial work later. The greatest value is often achieved when acoustic consultants are appointed during feasibility and concept design stages, allowing them to work alongside architects before room sizes, layouts and finishes become fixed.

Theatres and Performance Venues

Acoustics play a fundamental role in audience experience. Acoustic consultants often work closely with our AV consultancy and Theatre design consultancy teams to ensure that technology, architecture and room acoustics are considered together

Whether designing a theatre, performing arts centre, studio theatre or auditorium, the acoustic characteristics of a space influence how audiences hear speech, music and performance.

Good acoustic design helps ensure that performers can be heard clearly throughout the venue while creating an environment that is comfortable and engaging for audiences.

Theatre projects frequently require careful consideration of reverberation, sound isolation, audience geometry and the interaction between acoustics, stage technology and audio visual systems.

These decisions are most effective when they are considered during the earliest stages of venue planning and auditorium design.

Studios and Content Creation Spaces

Studios present a different set of acoustic challenges.

Television studios, podcast studios, broadcast facilities, recording environments and virtual production studios all require carefully controlled acoustic conditions.

Unwanted background noise, excessive reverberation and poor sound isolation can significantly affect production quality.

As virtual production continues to grow, acoustic performance has become increasingly important. While much attention is often given to LED volumes, tracking systems and production technology, the acoustic environment remains essential to achieving professional results.

By considering acoustics alongside lighting, production workflows and AV systems, clients can create facilities that support high-quality content creation and future operational flexibility.

Education and Learning Environments

Research consistently demonstrates the relationship between acoustics and learning.

Students cannot learn effectively if they struggle to hear their teacher, and lecturers cannot communicate effectively if speech clarity is compromised by excessive reverberation or background noise.

Acoustic design is therefore an important consideration for:

Classrooms

Seminar rooms

Group study spaces

Lecture theatres

Learning commons

Superlabs

Specialist teaching facilities

In these environments, good acoustics improve speech intelligibility, reduce listener fatigue and support better learning outcomes.

The earlier acoustic requirements are considered, the easier it becomes to integrate them into the wider architectural design.

Healthcare Training and Clinical Skills Facilities

Healthcare education environments present particularly complex acoustic requirements.

Clinical skills suites, simulation facilities and observation rooms often rely on a combination of teaching, communication, recording and assessment technologies.

These spaces may include observation rooms, simulation wards, debriefing spaces and teaching environments, each with different acoustic requirements.

Poor acoustic performance can affect communication, reduce the effectiveness of training exercises and compromise recording quality.

By integrating acoustic design into the wider planning process, organisations can create facilities that support effective teaching, observation and assessment.

Meeting Rooms, Boardrooms and Hybrid Working

The workplace has changed significantly in recent years.

Hybrid meetings, video conferencing and digital collaboration have become standard features of many organisations.

However, technology alone cannot solve poor room acoustics.

Many organisations invest in high-quality microphones, loudspeakers and video conferencing systems, only to discover that meetings remain difficult because the room itself performs poorly.

Excessive reverberation, background noise and poor speech intelligibility can undermine even the most sophisticated AV systems.

Good acoustic design helps ensure that meeting rooms, boardrooms and collaboration spaces support clear communication for both in-person and remote participants.

Acoustics and AV Systems

One of the most important principles in audio visual design is that technology cannot compensate for a poorly designed acoustic environment.

A common misconception is that adding more loudspeakers, larger displays or better microphones will solve communication problems.

In reality, the performance of AV systems is heavily influenced by the acoustic characteristics of the space in which they operate.

When acoustics and AV design are considered together from the outset, organisations achieve better outcomes, more effective communication and improved value from their technology investments.

This is why acoustic consultants and AV consultants often work closely together throughout the design process.

Why Use an Acoustic Consultant?

Acoustic consultants provide specialist expertise that helps clients understand how sound will behave within a space before it is built.

Their role is not simply to solve problems, but to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

By engaging an acoustic consultant early, clients can:

Reduce project risk

Improve user experience

Support learning and communication

Enhance audience experience

Improve AV system performance

Avoid costly redesigns

Create more flexible and future-ready environments

Most importantly, they can ensure that acoustic performance becomes an integral part of the design rather than a problem to be addressed later.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some of the most common questions we are asked about acoustic consultancy and acoustic design.

What does an acoustic consultant do?

An acoustic consultant helps clients, architects and project teams create spaces that support clear communication, learning, collaboration and performance. Their role may include assessing room acoustics, controlling noise and vibration, improving speech intelligibility, designing sound insulation and advising on materials, layouts and building systems. By considering acoustics from the earliest stages of a project, consultants help ensure that spaces sound as good as they look.

When should an acoustic consultant be appointed?

The greatest value is usually achieved when an acoustic consultant is appointed during feasibility studies, briefing or concept design stages. Early involvement allows acoustic requirements to be integrated into the architectural design before room sizes, layouts, finishes and building systems become fixed. This often leads to better outcomes and helps avoid costly changes later in the project.

Can poor acoustics be fixed with AV technology?

Not entirely. While microphones, loudspeakers and other AV technologies can help support communication, they cannot fully compensate for poor room acoustics. Excessive reverberation, background noise and poor sound isolation can reduce speech intelligibility and limit the effectiveness of even the most sophisticated AV systems. The best results are achieved when acoustic design and AV design are considered together from the outset.

Do meeting rooms and classrooms need acoustic design?

Yes. Any space where people need to communicate clearly can benefit from good acoustic design. In classrooms, poor acoustics can affect concentration, comprehension and learning outcomes. In meeting rooms and boardrooms, excessive reverberation and background noise can make conversations more difficult and reduce the effectiveness of hybrid meetings. Good acoustic design helps create environments that support clear speech, reduce listener fatigue and improve the overall user experience.

Final Thoughts

Good acoustics are rarely noticed when they are done well, yet they influence almost every aspect of how people experience a space.

Whether designing a theatre, studio, lecture theatre, clinical skills facility, boardroom or virtual production environment, acoustic performance should be considered from the earliest stages of a project.

By bringing acoustic consultants into the design team early and encouraging close collaboration with architects, AV consultants and other specialists, clients can create spaces that are more comfortable, more effective and better suited to the needs of the people who use them.

The result is not simply a better sounding room, but a more successful building.

Explore our acoustics case studies to see how early acoustic design has helped clients create successful theatres, studios, educational facilities and workplace environments.

Why Use an AV Consultant?

When planning a new theatre, studio, educational facility, healthcare training environment or corporate workplace, audio visual technology is often one of the most critical elements of the project. Yet it is also one of the areas most likely to be overlooked until relatively late in the design process.

Many of the decisions that affect AV performance are made long before equipment is specified. Room layouts, ceiling heights, furniture arrangements, equipment locations, power provision, network infrastructure and acoustic treatments all influence how successfully technology can be integrated into a space. Once these decisions become fixed, opportunities can be lost and costs can increase significantly.

Modern buildings rely on technology to communicate, collaborate, teach, present, entertain and engage. Whether the project involves a lecture theatre, a virtual production studio, a clinical skills facility or a corporate boardroom, the success of the space often depends on how effectively technology has been integrated into the wider design.

This is where an AV consultant can make a significant difference.

An AV consultant helps clients create spaces where technology supports communication, learning, collaboration and performance. By working alongside architects, engineers and project teams from the earliest stages of a project, AV consultants help ensure that audio visual systems are fully integrated into the design rather than added as an afterthought.

What Does an AV Consultant Do?

Audio visual systems have become increasingly complex. Today’s projects frequently involve integrated technologies including audio systems, presentation displays, video conferencing platforms, streaming systems, control systems, digital signage, broadcast infrastructure and specialist production equipment.

An AV consultant provides independent expertise throughout the project lifecycle, helping clients make informed decisions about technology, infrastructure and future requirements.

This often begins during the earliest project stages, where operational requirements are defined and technology strategies are developed. As the project progresses, the consultant works alongside architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, IT specialists and other consultants to ensure that AV systems are properly coordinated within the wider building design.

The result is not simply a collection of equipment, but a carefully considered technology environment that supports the way people work, learn, communicate and perform.

The performance of AV systems is closely linked to the acoustic quality of a space, which is why AV consultants often work alongside acoustic consultants during the design process.

Theatre and Studio Projects

For theatres, studios and performance venues, audio visual technology is often central to the user experience.

Whether developing a new performing arts venue, refurbishing an existing theatre or creating a specialist studio facility many organisations engage specialist theatre consultancy services alongside AV consultancy to ensure audience, operational and technical requirements are considered together, successful projects require careful consideration of audience needs, production requirements and operational workflows.

AV consultants help ensure that technologies such as sound reinforcement systems, communications systems, video infrastructure and production technologies are integrated alongside lighting, acoustics, stage engineering and architectural design.

This approach is particularly valuable for theatres, drama studios, rehearsal spaces, television studios, broadcast facilities and content creation environments where technology plays a fundamental role in how the space functions.

As production technologies continue to evolve, specialist consultancy can help clients create facilities that remain flexible and relevant long after construction has been completed.

Education and Healthcare Learning Environments

The expectations placed on educational spaces have changed dramatically over recent years.

Classrooms, lecture theatres and collaborative learning environments are increasingly expected to support blended learning, digital content delivery, recording, streaming and interactive teaching methods.

An AV consultant helps educational institutions develop technology strategies that support both current teaching practices and future developments. This can involve everything from standard teaching spaces and group study rooms through to specialist facilities such as superlabs, simulation centres and clinical skills environments.

In healthcare education, technology often plays an even more critical role. Clinical skills suites and simulation facilities require sophisticated audio visual systems to support observation, recording, assessment and feedback. These spaces frequently combine teaching, healthcare simulation and technology in ways that require careful planning and coordination.

By considering these requirements early in the design process, institutions can create environments that are intuitive to use, easier to manage and capable of supporting evolving educational needs.

Corporate Spaces and Workplace Technology

The workplace has undergone significant transformation, driven by hybrid working, digital collaboration and changing expectations around communication.

Meeting rooms are no longer simply spaces with a table and projector. Today’s organisations require environments that support seamless communication between in-person and remote participants, while providing a consistent and reliable user experience.

AV consultants help organisations plan technology for meeting rooms, boardrooms, collaboration spaces, presentation environments and workplace communication systems. They also advise on digital signage, content management systems, room booking platforms and workplace technologies that help organisations communicate more effectively with employees and visitors.

The objective is not simply to install technology, but to create spaces that are easier to use, more productive and better aligned with the needs of the organisation.

Virtual Production for Corporate Communications

While virtual production is often associated with the film and television industries, many organisations are now exploring the technology for corporate communications, training, marketing and content creation.

Corporate virtual production studios can offer significant advantages over traditional production methods, providing organisations with greater flexibility and control over content creation.

These facilities may incorporate LED volumes, virtual environments, camera tracking systems, green screen technology, broadcast infrastructure and sophisticated production workflows. However, the success of a virtual production studio depends on much more than selecting the latest technology.

Studio dimensions, operational workflows, lighting infrastructure, acoustics, cooling, power requirements and future expansion all need to be considered as part of a coordinated design strategy.

An AV consultant can help organisations determine the most appropriate approach, ensuring that investments are aligned with operational objectives and future content requirements.

Why Involve an AV Consultant Early?

One of the most common challenges encountered on building projects is that technology requirements are considered too late.

By the time audio visual systems are discussed, decisions may already have been made that affect room layouts, infrastructure routes, equipment accommodation, power requirements or network provision.

When AV consultants are involved during feasibility studies, briefing stages and early design development, these requirements can be integrated into the project from the outset. AV consultants often work alongside a venue design consultant to ensure that technology, operations and user requirements are fully integrated into the wider design of the building.

This often leads to better outcomes, fewer compromises and reduced project risk. It also enables project teams to make informed decisions before key aspects of the design become fixed.

In many cases, early consultancy can prevent costly redesigns and help ensure that technology investments continue to deliver value long into the future. Good room acoustics are often overlooked until problems emerge. Our article on the hidden impact of acoustics explains why acoustic design should be considered from the earliest stages of a project.

AV Consultant vs AV Integrator: What’s the Difference?

One of the most common questions clients ask is whether they need an independent AV consultant or whether they can simply engage an AV integrator to design and install the systems.

While both play important roles, they serve different functions within a project.

An AV integrator is responsible for supplying, installing and commissioning audio visual systems. Their expertise is essential during project delivery, and many provide excellent technical support and implementation services.

An AV consultant, however, works independently on behalf of the client. Their role is to develop the brief, define requirements, coordinate design activities and ensure that technology decisions support the project’s operational objectives.

The consultant’s advice is not tied to a particular manufacturer, product range or installation contract. Instead, recommendations are based on what is most appropriate for the project and the people who will use the space.

This independent perspective can provide significant benefits throughout the project lifecycle.

The Advantages of Independent AV Consultancy

Perhaps the greatest advantage of independent consultancy is objectivity.

Technology decisions are driven by operational requirements rather than product preferences. Systems are designed around the needs of users, future flexibility and long-term value.

Independent AV consultants also help coordinate technology with architecture, acoustics, IT infrastructure and building services, reducing the risk of conflicts during construction and installation.

When projects move into procurement, detailed specifications enable multiple integrators to tender against a clearly defined scope of works. This provides greater transparency and often results in improved value for money.

During installation and commissioning, consultants can also provide independent technical oversight, helping to ensure that systems perform as intended and that the client’s objectives are achieved.

Rather than replacing AV integrators, independent consultancy works alongside them, helping create better outcomes for clients and project teams alike.

Working Across Multiple Sectors

At Drama by Design, our AV consultancy experience spans theatres, studios, educational facilities, healthcare training environments and corporate workplaces.

We understand that every project is different. A lecture theatre has different requirements from a virtual production studio. A clinical skills suite operates differently from a boardroom. A theatre presents different challenges from a hybrid meeting environment.

By understanding how people use spaces and how technology supports those activities, we help clients develop solutions that are practical, effective and capable of adapting to future requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some of the most common questions we are asked about AV consultancy and audio visual system design.

What does an AV consultant do?

An AV consultant helps clients, architects and project teams plan and design technology systems that support communication, collaboration, learning and performance. Their role may include developing technology strategies, defining project requirements, designing audio visual systems, preparing specifications, coordinating with architects and engineers, supporting procurement and reviewing installations. By providing independent advice, AV consultants help ensure that technology is aligned with the needs of users and the objectives of the project.

When should an AV consultant be appointed?

The greatest value is usually achieved when an AV consultant is appointed during feasibility studies, briefing or concept design stages. Early involvement allows technology requirements to be integrated into the wider building design before key decisions about room layouts, infrastructure, power, acoustics and building services become fixed. This often results in better outcomes, reduced project risk and fewer costly changes later in the project.

What’s the difference between an AV consultant and an AV integrator?

An AV consultant provides independent advice on behalf of the client, helping to define requirements, develop designs and ensure that technology solutions support the project’s objectives. An AV integrator is responsible for supplying, installing and commissioning the systems. While both play important roles, the consultant focuses on strategy, design and client representation, while the integrator focuses on implementation and delivery. The most successful projects often involve close collaboration between both disciplines.

Can an AV consultant help with virtual production studios?

Yes. AV consultants can play an important role in the planning and design of virtual production facilities, helping clients understand how technology, architecture and operational workflows need to work together. This may include advising on LED volumes, camera tracking systems, audio infrastructure, lighting integration, control systems, broadcast workflows and support spaces. By becoming involved early in the project, consultants can help create virtual production studios that are efficient, flexible and capable of supporting future technological developments.

Final Thoughts

Technology is now fundamental to the way people learn, collaborate, communicate and create.

By combining technical expertise with an understanding of operations, architecture and user experience, AV consultants help create spaces that are more effective, more reliable and better prepared for the future.

Whether you’re planning a theatre, studio, educational facility, healthcare training environment, boardroom or virtual production studio, early AV consultancy can help ensure that technology supports your objectives from concept through to completion.

Contact Drama by Design to discuss your project.

What Does a Venue Design Consultant Do? A Guide for Theatres, Studios and Entertainment Venues

When planning a new theatre, arts venue, television studio, virtual production facility or multi-purpose entertainment venue, many clients naturally focus on the building itself. While architecture plays a vital role in shaping the appearance and character of a venue, the long-term success of a project often depends on decisions that are less visible during the early design stages.

This is where a venue design consultant can add significant value. Effective venue design consultancy helps clients balance audience experience, operational efficiency and technical performance throughout the life of a project.

A venue design consultant helps clients, architects and project teams understand how a venue will actually function, ensuring that operational, technical and audience requirements are considered alongside architectural aspirations from the very beginning.

Whether the project involves a theatre, studio, performance space, visitor attraction or educational facility, specialist consultancy helps create venues that are practical, flexible and capable of supporting future requirements.

Looking Beyond the Building

A successful venue is much more than a collection of rooms.

Whether the project is a theatre, arts centre, broadcast studio, virtual production facility or multi-purpose venue, it must support the needs of performers, audiences, technical teams, operators and owners.

Questions often arise around audience sightlines, performer access, technical infrastructure, backstage accommodation, operational workflows and future flexibility. While these issues can have a significant impact on the success of a venue, they are not always fully addressed within a traditional architectural brief.

Bridging the Gap Between Vision and Reality

Venue design consultants act as a bridge between creative ambitions and practical delivery.

Working alongside architects, engineers, acousticians, AV consultants and specialist contractors, they help define the requirements that shape a successful venue.

Venue design consultants may advise on theatre planning, auditorium design, stage infrastructure, technical systems, accessibility, acoustics, operational workflows and future-proofing strategies. By addressing these issues early, projects can avoid costly redesigns and operational limitations later.

Venue Design Consultant vs Architect: What’s the Difference?

One of the most common misconceptions is that venue consultants and architects perform the same role.

In reality, the two disciplines complement each other.

Architects focus on the overall design of a building, including aesthetics, planning, structure and user experience. A venue design consultant focuses on how the venue operates, how people use it and how technical systems support its intended purpose.

For example, an architect may design an auditorium, while a venue consultant helps determine sightlines, technical infrastructure, backstage facilities, production requirements, audience experience and operational workflows.

The most successful projects are those where architects and specialist consultants collaborate from the earliest stages.

Supporting Theatre and Performing Arts Projects

Theatre projects remain one of the most common areas where specialist consultancy is required.

A theatre consultant will typically advise on audience configuration, stage design, production requirements, backstage planning and technical systems integration.

The objective is not simply to create a visually impressive building, but to ensure the venue functions effectively for performers, audiences and operators for many years to come.

This is particularly important for theatres, performing arts centres, educational venues and community arts facilities, where flexibility and long-term usability are often critical considerations.

From feasibility studies and business cases through to detailed technical design, specialist consultancy helps clients make informed decisions that improve audience experience, operational efficiency and long-term value.

The Growing Importance of Technical Design

Modern venues rely increasingly on technology.

Audio visual systems, communications infrastructure, broadcast capabilities, control systems and digital production technologies now play a central role in many projects.

As a result, clients are increasingly engaging AV consultants and technical design specialists at an earlier stage in the project lifecycle.

Early involvement allows technical requirements to be integrated into the building design rather than retrofitted later, reducing costs and improving outcomes.

Whether designing a theatre, auditorium, visitor attraction, conference venue or studio facility, successful projects depend on careful coordination between architecture, technology and operations.

Related Services

Theatre Consultancy

Studio Consultancy

Audio Visual Consultancy

Acoustic Design

Successful venue design projects often require input from multiple specialist disciplines. Many venue design consultancy projects involve close collaboration between theatre consultancy, studio consultancy, AV consultancy and acoustic design specialists to ensure all aspects of a venue work together effectively.

Beyond Theatres: TV & Music Studios, Virtual Production and Broadcast Facilities

Today, many projects involve highly specialised production environments that require a combination of architectural, technical and operational expertise.

These projects may include:

Television studios

Broadcast facilities

Podcast studios

Virtual production studios

Green screen studios

Motion capture facilities

Educational media facilities

Multi-purpose event venues

Virtual production has transformed the way content is created. Modern VP studios combine LED volumes, camera tracking systems, real-time rendering technologies and sophisticated production workflows within a highly controlled environment.

The success of these facilities depends on much more than simply installing technology. Studio dimensions, sightlines, structural requirements, lighting infrastructure, acoustics, power distribution, cooling and operational workflows all need to be considered from the earliest stages of design.

Similarly, green screen studios require careful planning to ensure the space supports efficient production workflows, lighting requirements, camera positions and future technology upgrades.

Why Involve a Consultant Early?

One of the most common challenges encountered on venue projects is that critical operational and technical requirements are identified too late.

By involving a specialist consultant during feasibility and concept stages, project teams can make informed decisions before key design parameters become fixed.

Early consultancy helps reduce project risk, improve operational efficiency, avoid costly redesigns and ensure that venues remain flexible and adaptable over time. In many cases, a relatively small investment in specialist advice at the outset can deliver substantial benefits throughout the life of a venue.

Venue design consultants may be appointed by architects, theatre operators, educational institutions, local authorities, developers and cultural organisations. While every project is different, the common objective is to ensure that operational, technical and audience requirements are fully considered throughout the design process.

Theatre Consultancy and Venue Design

Theatre consultants play an important role in the planning and design of performance venues. While architects focus on the overall building design, theatre consultants help ensure that venues function effectively for performers, audiences, technicians and operators.

Their expertise may include auditorium planning, stage design, backstage accommodation, technical infrastructure, audience sightlines, accessibility and production requirements. By considering these factors alongside architectural design, theatre consultants help create venues that are practical, flexible and capable of supporting a wide range of performances and events.

The greatest value is often achieved when theatre consultants are involved during feasibility and concept design stages, allowing operational and technical requirements to be integrated into the design from the outset.

Many venue projects also require close collaboration between theatre consultants, AV consultants, acoustic design consultants and architects to ensure that audience experience, technical performance and operational efficiency are considered together.

Working Internationally

Performance venues, studios and entertainment facilities are increasingly developed by international project teams, bringing together clients, architects, engineers, operators and specialist consultants from multiple countries.

At Drama by Design, we support projects throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, including Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and other overseas markets.

Whether supporting a performing arts venue in the UK, a broadcast facility in Ireland or a virtual production studio in the UAE, our role remains the same: ensuring technical, operational and audience requirements are fully integrated into the design process from the outset.

Through a combination of remote collaboration and on-site engagement, we are able to support projects and design teams wherever they are based.

Our experience includes theatres, educational facilities, studio environments and cultural venues, helping clients create spaces that are technically robust, operationally efficient and adaptable to future requirements. Please view our case studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some of the most common questions we are asked about venue design consultancy, theatre planning and studio design.

What does a venue design consultant do?

A venue design consultant helps clients, architects and project teams plan venues that function effectively for audiences, operators and technical teams.
New Adelphi – Theatre, Recording Studio and Performance Space Design

The New Adelphi Building is a landmark centre for arts, performance and creative education, bringing together theatre, music, dance, media and design disciplines within a single purpose-built facility. Designed to inspire creativity and collaboration, the building provides students with access to industry-standard performance, production and recording facilities, creating an environment that bridges education and professional practice.

Drama by Design was appointed by BAM Construction as Project and Design Manager for all specialist theatre, performance and studio systems throughout the development. Working from the design stage through to project completion, our role was to manage and coordinate the delivery of the specialist technical installations, ensuring that all systems were fully integrated, delivered efficiently and met the University’s operational and educational objectives.

The building incorporates an extensive range of specialist facilities, including a 350-seat flexible theatre, studio theatre, television acting studios, recording studios, radio facilities, dance studios, ensemble rooms, rehearsal spaces and live performance environments. The diversity of spaces required a carefully coordinated technical strategy that would allow each facility to function independently while also enabling resources to be shared across the wider building.

At the heart of the development is a highly adaptable performance theatre designed to support a wide variety of production styles. Drama by Design oversaw the delivery of a flexible auditorium and staging system capable of accommodating end-on, thrust, promenade and theatre-in-the-round configurations. The seating and staging arrangements can be reconfigured to suit individual productions, providing students and visiting companies with a professional-standard performance environment that encourages experimentation and creativity.

The theatre was equipped with comprehensive stage engineering and theatre infrastructure, including a tension wire grid connected to perimeter technical gantries, providing safe and flexible access for lighting, sound and production equipment. Motorised lighting bars, flying systems and extensive technical infrastructure were incorporated throughout the venue, enabling the theatre to support everything from drama productions and live music performances to conferences and public events.

Acoustic performance was a key consideration within the theatre design. Adjustable acoustic curtains allow the auditorium environment to be modified to suit different performance requirements, creating appropriate acoustic conditions for speech, drama, amplified music and musical performance. This flexibility ensures the venue can accommodate a broad range of artistic and educational activities.

The studio theatre and television acting studios were designed to provide professional training environments with flexible technical infrastructure and integrated production systems. Comprehensive lighting, power and signal distribution systems enable the spaces to support performance, rehearsal, filming and teaching activities while allowing equipment to be connected and reconfigured quickly to suit changing requirements.

The building also houses a suite of professional recording and radio studios designed to support music technology, audio production and broadcast teaching. Drama by Design coordinated the specialist technical infrastructure throughout these spaces, ensuring seamless integration between studios, rehearsal rooms and performance venues. Extensive audio, fibre and data networks connect facilities across the building, allowing signals and media resources to be routed efficiently between spaces and providing long-term flexibility for future developments.

A key objective of the project was to create a fully connected creative arts environment where performance, recording, broadcasting and teaching activities could interact seamlessly. Through careful coordination of theatre systems, studio technologies and building-wide infrastructure, Drama by Design helped deliver a facility that supports collaboration across disciplines while providing students with access to professional-standard production environments.

The completed New Adelphi Building stands as one of the UK’s leading higher education facilities for the performing arts and creative industries. The project demonstrates Drama by Design’s expertise in theatre consultancy, theatre technology design, studio design, performance venue planning and project management, delivering a technically sophisticated and future-ready environment for arts education.

Theatre Consultancy and Broadcast Studio Design for a Creative and Performing Arts Campus Building

This award-winning development was created to support the next generation of performers, writers, journalists and media professionals, bringing together world-class theatre, broadcast and teaching facilities within a single creative arts building. Designed as a hub for performance, production and media education, the facility provides students with access to professional-standard environments that mirror industry practice while supporting a wide range of academic disciplines.

Drama by Design was appointed as Theatre, Broadcast and AV Consultant, responsible for the design of the technical systems throughout the building. Our role included the complete technical design of the television and radio studios, detailed theatre systems design for the performance spaces and project management of the specialist installations during the construction phase. Working closely with the design team and main contractor, we helped deliver a highly integrated facility that supports performance, teaching, production and broadcasting activities across multiple departments.

At the heart of the building is a fully flexible 180-seat theatre designed to support a wide range of performance styles and teaching activities. The venue is complemented by a comprehensive suite of backstage facilities, including dressing rooms, scenery workshops and green room facilities, creating a professional production environment for students and visiting practitioners. Additional drama and dance studios, together with a lecture theatre capable of operating as a performance venue, provide further flexibility across the building.

Drama by Design developed the theatre technology infrastructure to maximise flexibility and future adaptability. The main theatre incorporates an innovative overhead gantry system with movable beams and motorised hoists, enabling lighting, scenery and technical equipment to be positioned throughout the space. This provides exceptional flexibility for theatre productions, performances and teaching activities while ensuring safe and efficient technical access.

Comprehensive stage lighting systems were designed and installed throughout the performance spaces, providing professional production capabilities across the theatre, studios and teaching environments. Flexible infrastructure allows both traditional and LED lighting equipment to be deployed as required, while integrated control systems provide simple operation for day-to-day teaching and sophisticated control for performances and events. Programmable house, working and performance lighting systems enable venue operators to tailor the environment to suit a wide range of activities.

Alongside the performing arts facilities, Drama by Design designed a suite of state-of-the-art television and radio studios that provide students with hands-on experience in professional broadcast production. The television studios feature flexible lighting grids, pantograph suspension systems and comprehensive technical infrastructure that enables video, audio and communications systems to be connected seamlessly between studio floors and production galleries. The facilities were designed to replicate professional broadcast environments, supporting both practical teaching and content creation.

The building-wide audio infrastructure was designed around a networked digital audio platform, providing flexible routing and control throughout the facility. This approach enables audio resources to be shared between performance spaces, studios and teaching rooms while allowing future expansion as technologies evolve. User-friendly control interfaces ensure that sophisticated systems remain accessible to students, lecturers and technical staff alike.

The completed project demonstrates Drama by Design’s expertise in theatre consultancy, theatre technology design, television studio consultancy, radio studio design and integrated audio-visual systems. By bringing together performance venues, broadcast facilities and teaching spaces within a single coordinated design, the project provides an outstanding creative environment that prepares students for careers across the performing arts, media and broadcast industries.

The quality and innovation of the development were recognised through three North West Regional Construction Awards, including Sub-Regional Project of the Year, Client of the Year and Digital Construction Project of the Year.

Theatre Consultancy and Broadcast Studio Design for a Creative Arts Campus

Drama by Design was appointed as Theatre and AV Consultant for the project, working with the design team and the University’s in-house technical staff from the initial feasibility studies through to completion. Our role encompassed auditorium planning, stage design, seating design, theatre technology consultancy and the design of integrated audio-visual systems capable of supporting both large-scale teaching and high-profile public events.

The refurbishment transformed Central Hall into a highly adaptable venue capable of accommodating lectures for cohorts of up to 500 students whilst also functioning as a performance and events space for audiences exceeding 1,000 people. Achieving this flexibility required careful integration of teaching technologies, performance systems and venue infrastructure, ensuring the hall could seamlessly transition between academic, ceremonial and cultural uses.

Working closely with the architect, Drama by Design redesigned key elements of the auditorium, including the stage area and seating arrangements, creating a more functional and versatile environment for both presenters and performers. Particular attention was given to audience experience, operational efficiency and accessibility, ensuring the venue would continue to meet the University’s evolving requirements for many years to come.

A major aspect of the project was the complete redevelopment of the building’s audio-visual infrastructure. Drama by Design designed a fully networked AV solution that allows teaching, presentation and event systems to be controlled from multiple locations throughout the building. The new installation supports lectures, conferences, live events and graduation ceremonies, whilst also providing facilities for recording and streaming content to meet modern educational requirements.

The performance systems were similarly transformed through the introduction of new stage lighting infrastructure, energy-efficient LED lighting technology and modern control systems. A new motorised truss system was incorporated to provide flexible production lighting positions, enabling the venue to support a wide range of performance styles, presentations and ceremonial events. The replacement of legacy lighting systems with LED technology significantly improved performance capabilities while reducing energy consumption and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Additional works included upgrades to the venue’s performance sound systems, replacement stage drapery and track systems, new backstage communications infrastructure and improvements to stage management facilities. Together, these interventions have created a modern, technically sophisticated venue capable of supporting the diverse demands of a leading university while respecting the character and heritage significance of the original building.

The completed refurbishment demonstrates the value of specialist theatre consultancy and AV design in higher education environments. By combining auditorium design, theatre technology consultancy and integrated audio-visual systems design, Drama by Design helped deliver a future-ready venue that supports teaching, performance, conferencing and ceremonial events within one of the University’s most important buildings.

Platform Theatre, Central Saint Martins – Theatre Consultancy, Design and Project Management

The Platform Theatre at Central Saint Martins is one of London’s most innovative and flexible performance spaces, forming a key part of the King’s Cross Central regeneration project. Located within the University of the Arts London’s Central Saint Martins campus, the theatre sits at the heart of a new cultural quarter created as part of the largest urban redevelopment project undertaken in London for over 150 years.

Drama by Design was appointed as Theatre Consultant, Theatre Designer and Project Manager for the complete theatre fit-out. Working closely with the University, Overbury plc and the wider project team, we transformed a concrete shell into a fully equipped, professional-standard performance venue. Our involvement extended across every aspect of the theatre design, from auditorium planning and audience circulation through to stage engineering, theatre technology, technical infrastructure and seating design.

The completed building comprises a 300-seat adaptable theatre together with front-of-house facilities, dressing rooms, production offices and workshops arranged over four floors. The brief required a highly flexible performance space capable of supporting a wide range of teaching, rehearsal and public performance activities whilst providing students with access to professional theatre facilities.

As theatre consultants, Drama by Design developed the complete auditorium design, creating a flexible configuration that allows the theatre to be adapted to suit different performance styles. The design includes innovative side balconies that can function either as audience seating or performance areas, enabling directors and designers to reconfigure the relationship between performers and audience to suit the needs of individual productions.

Our scope included the design and specification of all theatre systems and infrastructure throughout the building. This encompassed stage engineering, stage lighting systems, performance sound systems, communications networks, production infrastructure, control systems and specialist theatre equipment. We also designed the front-of-house and stage technical gantries, providing safe and efficient access for lighting, sound and production personnel while maximising flexibility within the performance space.

A major element of the project was the design of the theatre’s flying system. Drama by Design designed and specified a 40-line double-purchase counterweight flying installation, providing professional scenery handling capabilities comparable to those found in leading producing theatres. The stage itself was designed with integrated understage storage, a stage crossover and an orchestra pit featuring a bespoke infill system, allowing the performance area to be reconfigured quickly to accommodate a wide variety of productions.

The seating system was entirely custom designed by Drama by Design to support the theatre’s flexible operating model. Every seat within the auditorium can be removed, enabling any part of the space to become a performance area. The balcony seating was engineered with rotating seat units and adaptable safety barriers, allowing audience sightlines to be redirected towards different stage locations and supporting a broad range of staging configurations.

In addition to designing the theatre, Drama by Design produced the detailed specifications for all specialist works, managed the tender process and acted as project manager throughout the installation phase. Working closely with contractors and stakeholders on site, we oversaw the delivery of the project from concept through to completion, ensuring the finished venue achieved the highest standards of functionality, safety and performance.

Today, the Platform Theatre stands as a benchmark for flexible theatre design within higher education. The project demonstrates Drama by Design’s expertise in theatre consultancy, theatre planning, auditorium design, stage engineering, theatre technology design and project management, delivering a world-class performance space that supports creativity, learning and professional production at the heart of one of London’s most significant cultural developments.

Carnival Hub Wokingham – Theatre and AV Consultancy for Multi-Use Performance Venue

Carnival Hub is a flagship sports and leisure facility developed by Wokingham Borough Council as part of a major investment in community infrastructure. While primarily designed as a professional-standard sports venue, the facility was also required to function as a flexible performance and events space capable of hosting concerts, theatre productions, presentations, conferences and community events.

Drama by Design was appointed as AV and Theatre Consultant, working alongside Henley Theatre Services, the project architect and the main contractor to develop the specialist theatre, audio-visual and performance systems throughout the venue. Our role involved the design and coordination of all technical systems, ensuring they could support a wide range of event types whilst integrating seamlessly within a modern sports environment.

The principal sports hall was designed to transform quickly from a sports venue into a fully equipped performance space. Extending bleacher seating allows the hall to accommodate audiences of up to 400 people, while a flexible modular stage system provides a professional platform for performances and presentations. Additional backstage facilities were incorporated to support performers and visiting productions, enhancing the venue’s operational flexibility.

A key challenge of the project was ensuring that all performance systems could be removed from use when the hall returned to its sporting function. Drama by Design therefore developed technical solutions that were either retractable or demountable, allowing the venue to maintain its primary sporting role without compromising the quality of its performance facilities.

The stage lighting infrastructure was designed to provide professional production capabilities while remaining simple to operate and maintain. Electrically operated lighting hoists allow equipment to be lowered safely for maintenance and reconfiguration, and then raised out of the way of sports activities when not in use. Modern LED luminaires and an intuitive lighting control system provide the flexibility required for theatre performances, live music events and corporate presentations.

Drama by Design also designed the venue’s sound and audio-visual systems, creating a solution capable of delivering excellent speech intelligibility and high-quality sound reinforcement across a broad range of events. The system supports everything from community performances and touring productions to conferences and presentations, while high-brightness projection and large-format display facilities further enhance the versatility of the space.

Through careful integration of theatre technology, stage lighting, sound and audio-visual systems, Carnival Hub has become far more than a sports facility. The venue now serves as a flexible cultural and community asset, capable of supporting an extensive programme of entertainment, educational and corporate events. The project demonstrates how specialist theatre consultancy can unlock the full potential of multi-use venues, creating spaces that maximise both operational flexibility and long-term value for their communities.

Stage Lighting Basics: A Beginner’s Guide to Theatre Lighting

Stage lighting basics are an important part of understanding how theatres, performance spaces and entertainment venues create engaging experiences for audiences. From illuminating performers to shaping atmosphere and directing attention, effective stage lighting plays a vital role in every successful production.

Theatre lighting (or stage lighting as some call it) is designed to make the stage performance visible to the audience, but the method used to light the stage will impact on the way the stage picture is perceived and should reinforce the overall dramatic impact of the production.

Why Stage Lighting Matters

Stage lighting does much more than illuminate performers. It helps direct audience attention, creates atmosphere, supports storytelling and influences how scenery, costumes and performers are perceived.

Whether designing a professional theatre, school drama studio or community performance space, effective stage lighting contributes significantly to audience experience and the overall success of a production.

Understanding Stage Lighting Basics

The most common method for lighting a theatre stage is called the McCandless System. Stanley McCandless wrote about this method in his 1932 book ‘A Method of Lighting the Stage’. His method was not meant to be the definitive method, but it is a useful guide based on his experience.

It can be described as a 3-point system: 2 lighting fixtures are placed in front of the subject and 1 fixture behind. The front fixtures (often profile spots) are located at a 45-degree angle to the left and right of the subject and at an angle of 45-degrees above the subject. These locations illuminate the features of the subject well and ensure they appear natural and have 3-dimensional form. The angles of the light provide definition of form without causing deep, dark shadows under the eyebrows, nose, or chin. The location and angle also provide visibility as the subject turns their head from side to side.

Colour and intensity added to the front lights will provide visibility and definition. McCandless recommended using a warm colour in one front light, and a cool colour in the other. The colours blend for a natural appearance and contrast with each other to provide definition. The third light, or ‘backlight’ (usually a Fresnel), is placed behind and high overhead the subject, without being directly over the subject or shining in the audience’s eyes. This causes the subject to stand out from the background and further defines their form by lighting the back of the head and top of the shoulders. The colour of the backlight is usually “colouring the shadows” cast by the front lights, however, a halo effect can be created by using intense, warm backlight.

While the McCandless System relies heavily on front and back lighting, many productions also use side lighting to create shape, texture and atmosphere on stage.

Side lighting positions luminaires to the left and right sides of the stage, usually mounted on vertical booms or ladders at different heights. Instead of illuminating the face directly, side light highlights the contours and movement of the performer’s body.

This technique is particularly common in dance productions because it reveals muscle definition and movement very clearly. In dramatic productions, side lighting can also create a more sculpted or mysterious appearance and is often used to produce strong shadows or dramatic contrast.

Coloured side lighting can significantly affect the mood of a scene. Cool colours may create a sense of isolation or tension, while warm colours can create intimacy or energy.

Using LED lighting in stage designs

Modern theatre lighting increasingly uses LED lighting fixtures instead of traditional tungsten lamps.

LED luminaires offer several advantages:

lower power consumption,

reduced heat output,

longer lamp life,

and the ability to produce many different colours without using gel filters.

Many LED fixtures use combinations of red, green, blue and sometimes white, amber or lime LEDs to create a wide range of colours electronically. This allows lighting designers to change colours instantly during a performance, rather than having to change gels in frames.

LED lighting has also made moving lights and colour-changing fixtures, which are mainly used for special effects and dynamic stage looks, more affordable and practical for schools, amateur theatre groups and smaller venues.

Theatre stage lighting design has four main functions in a theatrical performance, these are: Visibility, Motivation, Composition and Mood each of which is described in more detail below.

Visibility: doesn’t really need further explanation; the basic concept is that the stage lighting needs to illuminate things on stage that the audience should see and keep the lighting off parts of the stage the audience shouldn’t see.

Motivation: ensures that the stage lighting looks natural for the setting for example for a realistic interior scene at night the stage lights should appear to come from practical light fittings on the stage such as table lamps or chandeliers.

Composition: is also a part of Scenic Design and is the Lighting Designer’s attempt to enhance the possibilities the Scenic Designer and Director have provided.

Mood: is also a part of the other three functions – composition, motivation and the amount of light and kind of visibility all affect the mood of a production.

Lighting in Acting Areas

In order to provide good quality theatre stage lighting design most lighting is designed as a group of acting areas. The luminaires lighting each acting area are arranged to achieve the desired visibility, to adequately reveal the actor’s form and to make sure the actor appears separate and distinct from the scenic background. This approach helps create consistent coverage across the stage, so performers remain clearly lit as they move between different positions during a scene.

Modern Theatre Lighting Design

While the McCandless System remains an important foundation for understanding stage lighting, modern productions often use a combination of LED fixtures, moving lights, intelligent control systems and dynamic colour-changing technologies.

Lighting designers now have access to tools that allow them to create highly flexible lighting environments, adapting instantly to different scenes, moods and performance requirements.

Despite these technological advances, the fundamental principles of visibility, composition, motivation and mood remain as relevant today as they were when McCandless first described them.

Stage Lighting Basics in Modern Venue Design

Successful theatre lighting is not simply about selecting luminaires. Lighting positions, maintenance access, power distribution, control infrastructure, sightlines, acoustics and stage engineering all need to be considered as part of the wider venue design process.

This is why theatre consultants, lighting designers, AV consultants and architects often work together from the earliest stages of a project.

Early coordination allows lighting positions, power requirements, control infrastructure and maintenance access to be integrated into the building design, helping to create more flexible and future-proof performance spaces.

Further technical guidance is available from the ABTT and other industry bodies.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some of the most common questions we are asked about stage lighting and theatre lighting design.

What is stage lighting?

Stage lighting is the use of lighting equipment to illuminate performers, scenery and stage areas during a performance. In addition to providing visibility, stage lighting helps create atmosphere, direct audience attention, support storytelling and enhance the overall visual impact of a production.

What is the McCandless System?

The McCandless System is a theatre lighting method developed by Stanley McCandless in the early twentieth century. It uses two front lights positioned at 45-degree angles and a backlight to create natural-looking illumination, reveal form and provide separation from the background. Although modern lighting design has evolved significantly, the principles of the McCandless System remain influential today.

Why is stage lighting important?

Stage lighting helps audiences see performers clearly, but its role extends far beyond simple illumination. Effective lighting supports mood, composition, focus and storytelling, helping directors and designers shape how a performance is experienced by the audience.

Why are LED lights used in theatres?

LED lighting fixtures are increasingly used in theatres because they consume less power, generate less heat and offer greater flexibility than traditional tungsten lighting. Many LED luminaires can produce a wide range of colours without the need for coloured filters, allowing lighting designers to create dynamic lighting effects more efficiently.

What are the main functions of theatre lighting?

The four main functions of theatre lighting are visibility, motivation, composition and mood. Lighting helps audiences see what is happening on stage, supports the logic of the scene, enhances the visual composition of the performance and contributes to the emotional atmosphere of the production.

When should stage lighting be considered in theatre design?

Stage lighting should be considered from the earliest stages of theatre and venue design. Early planning allows lighting positions, power distribution, control systems, maintenance access and technical infrastructure to be integrated into the building design, creating more flexible and future-proof performance spaces.
