Theatre and Acoustics Consultancy for the SET Theatre, Kilkenny, Ireland new-build theatre project
Located within the renowned Langton’s Hotel in Kilkenny, Ireland, the SET Theatre is a flexible, state-of-the-art performance venue designed to accommodate a diverse programme of events. Opened in 2009, the auditorium seats up to 270 patrons or can operate in a mixed standing and seated configuration for audiences of up to 350. The venue hosts a wide range of performances and events, including live music, comedy, theatre, cinema screenings, conferences and corporate presentations.
Drama by Design was appointed as Theatre, AV and Acoustic Consultant, working closely with the project architects to develop the auditorium layout, technical infrastructure and performance systems. Our role encompassed the planning and specification of the theatre facilities, audio-visual systems and acoustic design, ensuring the venue could successfully support its varied operational requirements while maintaining a high-quality audience experience.
The theatre was conceived as a highly adaptable performance space with integrated technical facilities capable of supporting touring productions, conferences and in-house events. Drama by Design developed the stage lighting infrastructure, including accessible overhead lighting positions and a flexible power and control distribution system, enabling the venue to accommodate a broad range of production requirements while simplifying operation and maintenance.
A key element of the project was the design of a versatile audio system capable of delivering exceptional performance across multiple event types. The system was engineered to provide high-quality reinforcement for live music, speech, comedy and theatre, while also supporting full cinema presentation through a dedicated surround sound configuration. The resulting installation established the venue as one of the leading live performance spaces in the region and contributed to its recognition with the Best New Live Venue in Leinster 2009 award.
Drama by Design also specified a comprehensive audio-visual and conference presentation system, incorporating large-format projection, presentation facilities and an integrated control interface. This allows venue staff to efficiently manage lighting, sound and AV systems from a single point of control, supporting both professional productions and corporate events with equal ease.
Through the integration of theatre planning, technical systems design and acoustic consultancy, Drama by Design helped create a flexible, high-performance venue that continues to serve as one of Ireland’s premier regional entertainment and event spaces.
