University of Edinburgh Forrest Hill
The communications and marketing team at the University of Edinburgh is housed in the Forrest Hill building. They have a team that produces high-quality, professional audio-visual material, from audio podcasts to high-definition promotional films to communicate Edinburgh life to a global audience.
To deliver a full video service, from recording to post-production, a new TV studio production suite was created on the top floor of the building incorporating a TV studio, gallery, two edit suites and a green room.
Drama by design worked on the design and layout of the area as well as on the specification of the broadcast systems and project managed the works through to completion.
The studio lighting features a Doughty Studio rail system with fixed rails running the length of the studio with moveable rails underneath. Kino Flo LED studio lights are suspended underneath the rails on wheeled carriages. Control is wireless from an ETC ColorSource lighting control desk in the gallery.
Wall mounted facility panels are provided around the studio and in the green room and edit suites linked back to the gallery. The studio also has a perimeter curtain track with black and white drapes, there is a separate portable green screen that can be used both in the studio and for outside work.
The gallery features custom made furniture housing a Black Magic ATEM 1M/E production switcher routed to the cameras, recording devices and monitors via a Black Magic Smart Videohub. Material can be recorded either to two Black Magic Hyperdeck Studio Minis or to a central media asset management (MAM) system.
Audio control is from an Allen and Heath QU16 digital audio mixer, which will be used together with existing microphones and a Glensound ISDN codec for outside links.
The MAM consists of 96TB of QNAPS NAS storage with an additional 3TB of nearline storage all controlled via an Apple iMac Pro using Keyflow Pro software providing a flexible, cost effective and scalable solution.
Multivideo monitors are provided in the gallery together with preview monitors and a floor monitor for the studio. Audio monitoring is via monitor speakers,
The departments existing Panasonic PTZ cameras are used with the system.
