SET Theatre, Kilkenny, Ireland
The SET Theatre is part of the Langtons Hotel in Kilkenny, Ireland. Constructed in 2009 it is a state of the art conventional theatre performance space which can hold 270 people seated and 350 standing/seated. It was designed as a multipurpose auditorium which can cater for a wide range of events including music, comedy, film and conference.
Drama by Design worked as theatre consultants with the London architects on the design and layout of the building as well as the design and specification of the technical systems. We also worked as the acoustic consultants on this project.
An overhead gantry system was designed to provide accessible stage lighting positions. Socket outlets were then distributed around the gantries and balcony wired back to dimmers via a mains patching system. Luminaires consisted of a combination of conventional, LED and moving lights.
A comprehensive sound system was specified as it needed to cope with so a wide range of events. The system consists of a conventional left/right/centre cluster with some under balcony fills, portable sub-bass speakers that can be brought out when required, some stage monitor speakers and surround sound speakers enabling the venue to be used for full Dolby 7.1 surround in cinema mode. The venue won the Best New Live Venue in Leinster 2009 award for it’s sound system.
A full conference system was also installed incorporating a large format screen and projector and a lectern with integral touch screen capable of controlling the stage lighting, sound and audio visual systems.
